The Bell Rock Pathway Trail
The Bell Rock Pathway Trail in the Village of Oak Creek near Sedona, Arizona is a good choice for both hikers and photographers alike as it offers a nice diversity of scenery and trails. The trail offers breathtaking views of the iconic Bell Rock formation, Courthouse Butte, and the surrounding red rock landscape, making it a popular destination for visitors and hikers of all levels of fitness
The Trail is a 3.6-mile loop that starts at the Courthouse Vista parking lot (the south parking lot off highway 179) and takes hikers on a scenic journey through the Coconino National Forest. This is a very large parking lot by Sedona’s standards and you will also find the standard amenities there including restrooms information kiosks.
A Very Popular and Crowded Trailhead:
Be forewarned, that because of its easy access right off the highway 179 this Sedona trailhead can get extremely crowded at times as it’s a popular destination for tour buses to stop and disgorge its passengers for quick photo opps. Your best bet if possible is to visit early morning or on a weekday. The winter months are also generally less busy.
The trailhead or entrance is clearly marked, making it easy to get your bearings and start your journey. As you make your way along the trail, you'll be rewarded with some stunning views of the red rock formations that dominate the skyline. The towering Bell Rock formation is particularly impressive, rising up over 500 feet above the surrounding landscape. The trail takes you right up close to the base of the rock, giving you a chance to fully appreciate its scale and beauty.
In fact, if desired you can scramble up into the sandstone face of Bell Rock and hike up into its reaches. I personally don’t find this option particularly appealing or interesting and it can get way too crowded at times. My guess its just a matter of time before the Park service puts an end to this hiking option.
My Preferred Trail Route:
My preferred route or trail is to get on the Court House Butte loop trail which loops around this massive Butte that tops out at nearly 5,500 feet elevation. You can easily access the loop trail off the main Bell Rock pathway and its clearly marked with signage. The loop trail does not get nearly as crowded as the main stem and there is even a chance for some red rock solitude if you go at the right time of day or off season.
The Bell Rock Pathway Trail is rated as moderate, so while it's not the most difficult hike in the area, it does require some level of fitness. There are some steep sections and rocky terrain, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water. The trail is also mostly exposed, so be prepared for the sun and bring sunscreen.
Bell Rock Photography Tips:
As far as photography tips, there are some great opportunities for landscape shots of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. As you will see in some of my images below, using the trail as a leading line can make for a nice composition. Sunset or dusk is my favorite time to shoot at this location as the rock formations like Courthouse Butte can capture a nice warm glow. During the winter months it does occasionally snow in the Sedona area and this also a great time to capture these famous Sedona landmarks decked out in snow as you can see with the photos below.
In conclusion, hiking the Bell Rock Pathway Trail in the Village of Oak Creek is a worthwhile hiking and photography destination when visiting the Sedona area. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a scenic stroll, the trail offers something for everyone. So, pack your hiking gear and head out to explore this stunning part of Arizona's natural beauty.
