Nestled in the heart of the high desert, Ghost Ranch, located near Abiquiú, New Mexico, is a destination that captivates travelers with its stunning landscapes and rich history. From its vibrant red rock formations to its cultural significance, here are my personal top reasons to visit Ghost Ranch next time you are travelling in Northern New Mexico.

Ghost Ranch Has a Really Cool Vibe

The minute you pass under the Ghost Ranch property sign (see image above) off US highway 84 you know you are in a special place. The red rock scenery you see as you make your way to the official property entrance is outstanding and you will pass an old and uninhabited wooden cabin that looks like it’s a straight of a Hollywood western movie. In fact, if it looks familiar, it’s because it has been used as a set for movies like City Slickers and other films and series. When I first visited a few years ago you were allowed to park and walk up and check out the exterior of the cabin. This rustic cabin makes an excellent and very cool photography subject and setting for group photos. There is also an old horse corral near the cabin that is also worth checking out as well.

A True Western Landscape

Ghost Ranch is known for its towering red rock cliffs, colorful mesas, and expansive desert vistas. The views are so striking that they have inspired countless artists, including most famously Georgia O'Keeffe. I did not have time to explore the ranch’s many trails, but you will see the very landscapes that graced some of O'Keeffe's most iconic works. The famous Chimney Rock formation is clearly visible as you stroll around this large property which according to my research is over 20,000 acres.

Photography Options & Restrictions

The Ranch and the stunning surrounding red rock landscape is a Photographers dream. But, there are some commercial photography restrictions at Ghost Ranch and its best to visit their website for all the details about licensing agreements, etc. For instance, I was told any type of commercial photography was not permitted on the Georgia O'Keeffe related landscape tours. When I visited I was able to walk around and freely photograph the main property and its buildings . So obviously and its pretty clear they don’t have an issue if you take and post photos for non-commercial usage. But publishing images of the buildings for sale could obviously fall under commercial usage.

I did see one of her small cottage studios on the main property but was told access to her actual home was not available to the public.

The Box Canyon trail and Kitchen Mesa trail are popular options, providing different perspectives on the ranch’s natural beauty. If I remember correctly, all trail hikes have to be guided. Ghost Ranch is also a haven for paleontologists and fossil enthusiasts, home to some of the world’s most significant fossil discoveries. When I was walking around the property I actually saw a random box filled with what looked like ancient fossilized bones .
